Teddy Bear's Picnic

Child abuse and neglect is Australia's greatest social problem, and it happens because people live behind closed doors, and because no one wants to get involved. Child friendly communities will help change this, because in child friendly communities kids will be seen and heard. In child friendly communities, families won't live in isolation and unsupported. In child friendly communities, everyone will accept that the safety and wellbeing of kids is everyone's responsibility. For child friendly communities to be a reality, we need to engage the whole Australian community to get involved, and help make a positive difference to children's lives (Napcan 2007).

The highly successful Teddy Bears Picnic was enjoyed by over 500 children and their carers. The purpose of the day is to:

  • To raise awareness of Child Protection issues at a local level
  • An opportunity for networking for support services and extended families
  • To locally recognize and showcase nationally the regions strategies and goals toward raising awareness and prevention of child protection
  • To celebrate strengths and achievements of support services and community members towards these goals
  • To provide an ongoing sustainable commitment to child protection week and grow on the past history of the event
  • To always continue to send a strong message against child abuse.
